Is Cider Vinegar the Gold Standard?

My mother always had cider vinegar around the house but never any other that I can recall. I have always used cider vinegar like she did for recipes calling for vinegar. Is this correct, or should I be using white vinegar? In other words, is cider vinegar the all-purpose vinegar?
