Q. I have found a recipe that calls for "1 slice of pain de campagne." What is this ingredient? It says to toast it. I believe it is a bread of some sort. If so, where would I obtain this bread or can I make it?

A. Pain de Campagne is literally a French country bread, a husky, crusty, chewy bread, that is traditionally decorated with a cluster of grapes made from dough. It is made from a starter, and sometimes from a sponge, in addition, and contains yeast, water, whole-wheat flour, white flour and salt.

Any crusty, robust French bread will suffice in your recipe.
