Q. What is the definition of a relish?

A. It can apparently be anything you want it to be. We checked half-a-dozen food dictionaries, and the definitions included:

  • Anything served on or with another food to perk it up somewhat.
  • A condiment or highly flavored item of food taken with a plainer food to add flavor and interest to it.
  • A cooked or pickled sauce usually made with vegetables or fruits and often used as a condiment; can be smooth or chunky, sweet or savory, hot or mild.

Take your pick.
