Q. I was told by my physician not to eat black pepper because of a health issue. He never mentioned white pepper. Could there be any difference in digesting white pepper?

A. Oh, those sneaky doctors. They really keep you guessing, don't they? White pepper is simply the ripe, skinless berry of the piper nigrum plant, while black pepper is the result of picking and drying the very same berry before it is ripe. It seems unlikely to us that the degree of ripeness would affect the digestibility of the pepper, but we would never presume to give advice that you should be coercing from your physician.
