Comments:Think of this as a mortar and pestle for the Jetsons (if you remember the space-age Jetsons, that is.) A heavy ceramic ball in the curvy container mixes and mashes ingredients together as you shake vigorously, helping you produce spice rubs, marinades, dips, salad dressings, sauces, and salsas.

To use, put the ingredients inside, add the ceramic ball, screw halves together securely, and shake. The heavy ceramic ball crushes, grinds, and bruises the contents, releasing flavors from whole spices (including star anise and cinnamon), herbs, garlic, nuts, citrus rind, lime, or bay leaves. You may need to add ingredients in batches, and large or hard ingredients first. Liquids such as olive oil and creams can be added toward the end of the mixing to create dressings and marinades.

The Flavour Shaker comes with a spoon to help remove ingredients (quite possibly you didn't have a spoon in your kitchen already), which, like the rest of the shaker, is safe in the top rack of the dishwasher. The instructions in the requisite 918 languages include recipes from Mr. Oliver for a rub, a dressing, Salsa Verde, and few other ideas.
