Heartwarming Baked Apples
From How to Cook Like a Jewish Grandmother, by Marla Brooks

On a cold winter night, the smell of baked apples in the oven truly warms the heart and whets the appetite.

4 Granny Smith, Rome Beauty, and/or Golden Delicious (or any other firm variety) apples
4 Tbsp brown sugar or honey
Raisins to taste
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Water for bottom of baking dish

Cut about 1/2-inch off top of apple and set aside. Core apples and fill each with about a teaspoon brown sugar or honey, and 1/4 cup raisins, depending on taste. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Place top of apple back on and bake in a baking dish with about 1/4-inch of water in the bottom of the dish at 350F (175C) until apples are soft and tender when pierced with a fork.

Yield: Serves 4.
