Comments: Certainly one of the biggest problems with potato mashers is how much room they take up in a utensil drawer. Often you can't get the drawer open or closed because the mashing end gets caught on some other utensil and there is a huge traffic jam in the drawer. It's almost enough to make you rethink mashed potatoes altogether – almost.

Riding to our aid is the innovative company Prepara, which has developed the first folding potato masher. It's brilliant, and in its folded state takes up less than an inch and a half of height. You might wonder (as we did) whether the locking mechanism that holds the mashing surface in place is up to the task of mashing potatoes without slipping into its folded position, but you needn't worry – the locking mechanism is very, very sturdy. You squeeze the sides to flip the mashing head in or out of position and it is held in place by eight locking pins. The head is of milled stainless steel, which will mash the heck out of any potato, and the large handle gives you plenty of leverage.
