The Internet (and most of the rest of the publishing world), it appears, seems to agree with Victor Bergeron (founder of the Trader Vic’s restaurants), who said, “The real native South Seas food is lousy. You can’t eat it.”
Whether there is or was much truth to that statement, it is hard to come up with a good source of recipes, either online or off. Here are a few recipes we managed to find:
- Polynesian Florida Yellowfin Tuna Steaks
- Trout Seviche
- Mango Chutney
- Recipezaar has several dozen Polynesian recipes. It looks like the most comprehensive list available.
- Allrecipes.com has a number of Polynesian dishes.
- Recipesource.com has two Tahitian recipes, Ma’oa And Pahua Tairo, and Sauteed Prawns, as well as about two dozen Hawaiian recipes.
- Epicurious has nothing listed as Polynesian, but has several Hawaiian recipes.
- About.com has one Samoan dish, Esi Fafao.
The point is, there are recipes scattered here and there around the Internet. Your best bet for finding them seems to be a search of Polynesian recipes on the broader search engines.
If you really want Polynesian recipes, you may have to pry open that wallet and spring for Sam Choy’s Polynesian Kitchen: More Than 150 Authentic Dishes from One of the World’s Most Delicious and Overlooked Cuisines (Canada, UK), or the out-of-print, but still-available Taste of the Pacific (Canada, UK), from the University of Hawaii Press. They are the only books we have been able to come up with that focus on South Pacific cuisine.
